Renew an Expired Ontario Driver's Licence
If your driver's licence has expired, you can still renew it. The process depends on how long ago it expired. The longer it has been, the more tests you may need to retake.
How Long Has Your Licence Been Expired?
Select your situation and we will tell you exactly what tests you need and where to go.
What You Need Based on How Long It Has Been Expired
If your full licence (Class G or GM) expired less than 1 year ago, you may be able to renew online or in person without any additional tests. The process is the same as a standard renewal.
You need to pass a vision test before your licence can be renewed. Visit a DriveTest centre or the ServiceOntario Bay and College location in Toronto.
You need to pass a vision test, a written knowledge test, and two road tests (G1 and G2) before your licence can be renewed. However, you can fast-track through the road tests without mandatory waiting periods.
If your licence has been expired for more than 10 years, you must re-apply as a new driver. You cannot fast-track the process, which means you will go through the full graduated licensing system (G1, then G2, then full G) with all mandatory waiting periods. The full process takes a minimum of 20 months.
See the full G1/G2 licence guide βOnce a learner's permit (G1, G2, M1, M2) expires, it cannot be renewed. You must start the graduated licensing process over from the beginning. If you booked a road test before your expiry date, you may be able to get an extension until your test date. Contact a DriveTest centre for details.
