Your new driver's licence card is mailed to the address on file. It typically arrives within 4 to 6 weeks after you complete the renewal.

Delivery timelines may be affected during Canada Post disruptions. Visit Ontario.ca/Mail for current updates.

If your new licence has not arrived after 6 weeks, or your temporary document is about to expire, visit a ServiceOntario centre for assistance.

When you renew online, you may receive a Temporary Driver's Licence Validation Document. This is issued if your licence has already expired or will expire within 28 days. It allows you to legally drive while your new card is in the mail.

What to do with it:

1Download and print the document immediately after completing your renewal
2Carry both the printed document and your old licence card whenever you drive
3Once your new card arrives, your old card and temporary document are no longer valid
If you cannot print the document or have lost it, visit a ServiceOntario centre immediately. Do not drive without valid documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

My licence expired months ago. Can I still renew? +
Yes, you can renew an expired licence. If it has been expired for a long time, you may need to visit a ServiceOntario centre in person. Visit the expired licence guide for specific guidance based on how long ago it expired.
I moved recently. Can I update my address and renew at the same time? +
If you moved within the last 90 days, you cannot renew online. You have two options: (1) Visit a ServiceOntario centre to update your address and renew in the same visit, or (2) Update your address online first, wait 90 days, and then renew online. Option 1 is generally faster.

Yes, there are options for renewing while living outside Ontario. Visit the out-of-province renewal guide for instructions tailored to your situation.
I am 80 years old or older. Is my renewal process different? +
Yes. Drivers aged 80 and over have a different renewal process that includes mandatory vision tests and other steps. Visit the 80+ renewal guide for the complete process.
My new licence has not arrived after 6 weeks. What should I do? +
Visit a ServiceOntario centre. They can look up your renewal status and reissue your licence if needed. If your temporary validation document is about to expire before your card arrives, visiting a centre promptly is especially important.
