Does Your Plate Renew Automatically?

Answer a couple of quick questions to find out if your plate renews on its own or if you need to take action.

How Automatic Renewal Works

βœ… Renews Automatically

These plates renew 90 days before expiration at no cost. You will not receive a sticker or a confirmation notice.
β€’ Passenger vehicles
β€’ Light commercial vehicles (under 3,000 kg)
β€’ Motorcycles
β€’ Mopeds

❌ Must Renew Manually

These plates do not qualify for automatic renewal. You must renew online or in person before the expiry date.
β€’ Commercial and business vehicles
β€’ Heavy vehicles (over 3,000 kg)
β€’ Motorhomes
β€’ Buses and school buses
β€’ Vehicles manufactured before 1983
β€’ Snowmobiles
When your plate renews automatically, law enforcement systems are updated instantly. You do not need a sticker, a printed confirmation, or any documentation in your vehicle.

Eligibility for Automatic Renewal

Even if your vehicle type qualifies for automatic renewal, your plate will only renew if all three of the following conditions are met:

You have valid vehicle insurance on file
You have no outstanding vehicle fines, penalties, or tolls
You have no defaulted driver fines or fees
If your plate was automatically renewed, ServiceOntario will not contact you. No news is good news. You can verify your plate status anytime using the online tool.

If Your Plate Does Not Renew Automatically

If your plate cannot automatically renew because of an insurance issue or outstanding fines, ServiceOntario will contact you. Here is what to expect and what to do.

1You will be notified. If you signed up for digital reminders, you will receive alerts by text, email, or phone 90, 45, and 10 days before your plate expires. If you have not signed up, you will receive a letter by mail 90 days before expiry.
2Resolve the issue. Pay any defaulted driver fines, pay any outstanding vehicle fines or tolls, and make sure your vehicle has valid insurance on file.
3Renew manually. Once your issues are cleared, complete your renewal online or at a ServiceOntario centre.
If you do not resolve the issue before your plate expires, you will receive a final reminder 72 hours after expiry. You can still renew after that, but driving with expired plates is illegal and may result in fines.

To clear your plate for renewal:

Once all three issues are resolved, you can renew your plate online or in person.

Other Plate Types

Heavy commercial vehicles, buses, school buses, and farm-plated vehicles are not eligible for automatic renewal. You must renew these plates online or at a ServiceOntario centre before they expire.
