Certified Copy of Marriage Registration

$22 regular

A full copy of the original registration endorsed by the Office of the Registrar General. Includes all historical changes and corrections.

Use it for
β€’ Immigration or citizenship applications
β€’ Situations requiring the most detailed record
A record of solemnization of marriage (the document from your wedding ceremony) is not the same as a marriage certificate. You need the certificate for official purposes. If you are not sure which document you need, check with the agency or person requesting it before ordering.

How to Order

The quickest way to get a marriage certificate. You can order new certificates, replacements, certified copies, and search letters.

You will need:

1First and last names of both people who were married
2Dates of birth of both people
3Date and location (city, town, or reserve) of the marriage
4A Visa, Visa Debit, Mastercard, or Debit Mastercard for payment
Your marriage must be registered before a certificate can be issued. The officiant sends the signed marriage licence to ServiceOntario for registration. If you order soon after your ceremony, processing may take up to 8 weeks after registration is complete.

Download the application form, complete it, and mail it with your payment. Delivery takes 6 to 8 weeks.

Who Can Order

A marriage certificate can be ordered by:

Either person who was married
Children of the married couple
Parents of either person
An authorized representative (proof of authorization required)

A certified copy of the marriage registration can only be ordered by the married couple themselves, unless a court order allows another person to apply.

For a deceased person, you must be the surviving next of kin (parent, spouse, child, or sibling), executor, or estate administrator, and include a death certificate or funeral director's proof of death.

Special Situations

After getting married, you have two options for changing your last name. You can legally change it through the Office of the Registrar General, or you can simply assume your spouse's last name using your marriage certificate. Assuming a name costs nothing, takes less time, and leaves your birth registration unchanged. You can use your marriage certificate to update all of your identification documents to reflect the new name.

If you need a marriage certificate within 5 business days, you can use the premium online service or apply in person at the Toronto location (47 Sheppard Avenue East). Proof of urgency is required.

Accepted proof of urgency:

β€’ Medical emergency documentation
β€’ Letter confirming new employment
β€’ Embassy or consulate appointment letter
β€’ Travel reservations or airline tickets
β€’ Immigration hearing appointment letter
β€’ Wedding invitation (if you are a party to the marriage)

Emergency service incurs an additional $30 per document on top of regular fees.

To correct or change information on a marriage registration, request a registration amendment form from the Office of the Registrar General. The marriage must be currently registered in Ontario. Once the amendment is processed, any new certificate you order will reflect the updated information.

You can order a replacement through the same online application used for new certificates. The cost and delivery time are the same as ordering a new certificate.
